The Julius Center is one of twelve divisions of the UMC Utrecht. Its mission is to contribute to the scientific knowledge base of medical practice by initiating and conducting high-quality applied medical research and by providing high-quality education covering the area from bachelor to post-graduate teaching programs. The departments of the Julius Center are: Epidemiology, Primary Care, PHM (Public health, Healthcare innovation and evaluation, Medical humanities), and Biostatistics & Research Support. Its research programs cover four areas: Cardiovascular Diseases, Infectious Diseases, Cancer, and Methodology. The division also supports the design, conduct, analyses, and reporting of clinical research in virtually all departments of the UMC Utrecht.

A very strong track record in research of epidemiologic methods – with focus on intervention studies using observational, real world data - is required, with a proven capacity to perform cutting-edge research and making sure the developed methods find their way into applied research. The candidate should be an associate professor with a (bio)medical background, with an evident track record in medicine, methods of epidemiology and biostatistics/mathematics. A strong commitment to teaching (e.g., teaching qualification) is equally important, because of the role of the chair in the education of bachelor, master, and PhD students within the UMC Utrecht. Extensive experience in teaching bachelor, master, PhD and postgraduate trainees is a prerequisite, not only in an executive, but also in a coordinating position. Having his/her SKO (Senior Qualification Education) is a requirement. The candidate has proven capacities to set up and carry out cutting edge methodological as well as applied research, with a focus on real-world effectiveness research. The candidate has a strong track record of acquiring research funding (international grants, personal grants, industry) and has shown to be able to set-up and fund a research line. Furthermore, the candidate has proven capacities in supervising PhD students. In view of the strong interdisciplinary collaboration within the Julius Center, the UMC Utrecht, and Utrecht University, the candidate should be a team player with experience in working with clinicians, epidemiologists and other health care professionals. The UMC Utrecht uses a Qualification Portfolio for the appointment of new professors, as a replacement of the Curriculum Vitae. The reason for this is to get a more complete picture of future professors and to create a base for the evaluation of both quality and productivity in research, patient care, education and leadership. When any of the components of the Qualification Portfolio are not applicable for a candidate, these components can be left empty, with the exception of the component leadership, which is applicable for all candidates.
