The chair will lead a research group whose aim it is to develop, validate and implement novel design and statistical methods for epidemiological studies that aim to assess the effects of medical interventions when applied in the real world. Primary focus of the research will be on methods for observational studies of medical interventions, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. The professor of Methods for Epidemiologic Research will actively participate in the education of (bachelor and master) medical students, epidemiology master students, and PhD students. In all these different education programs, the chair will coordinate and teach various courses and modules on epidemiological methods. Also, the chair will participate in developing new courses and keeping existing courses up-to-date, regarding methods for research of the real world effects of medical interventions, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological.
The Julius Center is one of twelve divisions of the UMC Utrecht. Its mission is to contribute to the scientific knowledge base of medical practice by initiating and conducting high-quality applied medical research and by providing high-quality education covering the area from bachelor to post-graduate teaching programs. The departments of the Julius Center are: Epidemiology, Primary Care, PHM (Public health, Healthcare innovation and evaluation, Medical humanities), and Biostatistics & Research Support. Its research programs cover four areas: Cardiovascular Diseases, Infectious Diseases, Cancer, and Methodology. The division also supports the design, conduct, analyses, and reporting of clinical research in virtually all departments of the UMC Utrecht.
A very strong track record in research of epidemiologic methods – with focus on intervention studies using observational, real world data - is required, with a proven capacity to perform cutting-edge research and making sure the developed methods find their way into applied research. The candidate should be an associate professor with a (bio)medical background, with an evident track record in medicine, methods of epidemiology and biostatistics/mathematics.
A strong commitment to teaching (e.g., teaching qualification) is equally important, because of the role of the chair in the education of bachelor, master, and PhD students within the UMC Utrecht. Extensive experience in teaching bachelor, master, PhD and postgraduate trainees is a prerequisite, not only in an executive, but also in a coordinating position. Having his/her SKO (Senior Qualification Education) is a requirement.
The candidate has proven capacities to set up and carry out cutting edge methodological as well as applied research, with a focus on real-world effectiveness research. The candidate has a strong track record of acquiring research funding (international grants, personal grants, industry) and has shown to be able to set-up and fund a research line. Furthermore, the candidate has proven capacities in supervising PhD students.
In view of the strong interdisciplinary collaboration within the Julius Center, the UMC Utrecht, and Utrecht University, the candidate should be a team player with experience in working with clinicians, epidemiologists and other health care professionals.
