The candidate will primarily work in the research program ‘Brain at risk’ as researcher. In addition, he or she will work as a consultant epidemiologist in the same research group. The applicant is expected to write scientific papers and give presentations at national and international meetings.
The research focus of the Division Anesthesiology, Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine of UMC Utrecht is epidemiology. Several senior researchers in our division have a background in epidemiology and our non-clinical staff is working part-time in the Julius Center of UMC Utrecht. Our research program is interdisciplinary with collaboration of researchers from other fields including neurosciences, radiology, anesthesiology and intensive care medicine. ‘Brain at risk’ is one of three research programs of the division, and focusses on delirium and long-term neuropsychiatric outcome after anesthesia-surgery and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission. We have excellent infrastructure for advanced epidemiological research as we have by far the largest database on ICU delirium in the world. In addition, we have unique data on neuropsychiatric complications after cardiac surgery and ICU admission. Our research group is internationally well recognized and the leading group in Europe on delirium in ICU patients. We appreciate enthusiasm for research and honesty, and do not like hierarchy.
We are looking for an epidemiologist or a scientist from a related field, preferably with a PhD degree. The candidate should have experience in etiologic and/or prediction studies. Epidemiological research in intensive care medicine is exciting and challenging because of complex analysis of repeated measurements. Previously, we have applied Markov modelling, time-dependent Cox regression analysis and marginal structural modelling. The candidate should have expertise in these techniques or ambition to learn these. He/she should be able to communicate well with researchers from other disciplines and should be eager to learn to solve problems on the interface of epidemiology, neurosciences and intensive care medicine. Good social skills and a sense of humor are appreciated.
