The PhD candidate will execute a research project to improve our knowledge and understanding of how educational expertise is developed and maintained by excellent academic teachers. What are excellent teachers? How do excellent teachers organize their knowledge, how do they develop their expertise, what role do formal and informal networks play, what kind of teacher development activities do excellent teachers undertake, and last but not least, how do they impact student learning? The project will be of combined qualitative and quantitative design, leading to completion of a PhD thesis within four years. Intermediate results will regularly be presented, both written and orally, at meetings and conferences. The candidate will conduct project-related activities, like (social media) outreach. The project will lead to a minimum of three accepted international peer-reviewed articles. The candidate will participate in activities and courses for PhD students within the Graduate School of Social and Behavioural Sciences and the ICO (Interuniversitair Centrum voor Onderwijswetenschappen). Participation in teaching or organization of teacher development activities, as well as co-organization of workshops and conferences, are part of the appointment. The PhD student will also possibly supervise undergraduate students who are enrolled in a research internship.
The Utrecht Centre for Academic Teaching, Utrecht University, is a new interfacultary ‘umbrella’ organisation, in which all faculties of Utrecht University participate. The centre supports teacher development, education innovation, and scholarship of teaching and learning, and provides a platform for expertise exchange. The candidate will be appointed at the Education Center UMC Utrecht, and for the conduct of the study be detached to the centre. Supervision is provided by the Education Centre UMC Utrecht, and the department of Education, Faculty of Social Sciences.
You have a (research) master degree in education, or a related (social sciences) field. You have good organizational, social and communication skills and the ability to meet deadlines and to work both as an independent researcher and as a team member. Furthermore you have excellent English and Dutch oral proficiency, academic writing and presentation skills, and experience with quantitative and qualitative research methods. You have affinity (and preferable experience) with organisation/quality system of university education and academic teaching.
The maximum salary for this position (100%) is € 2.903,00 gross per month based on full-time employment (work week 36 hours). This job is based on a temporary position for 4 years, starting with a one year appointment.
