As a senior researcher you will work in two research groups of Prof. Rob Willems at the Department of Medical Microbiology of University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht and Prof. Dick Heederik at the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences of Utrecht University in a multi-disciplinary team with other wet-lab researchers, bioinformaticians, and clinicians. As a principle investigator you will develop and deliver innovative strategies and programmes in the field of microbiome research, focused on developing solutions to challenges in human health and disease. You will contribute to the development of research strategies in EXPOSOME, Initiate the development of research proposals and projects as self-contained items or as part of a broader programme, design and implement innovative research methodologies that add to the knowledge and understanding of the discipline, lead and manage independent research projects and research teams including supervising postdoctoral students, and supporting effective career development to help develop the next generation of researchers. Furthermore, you will secure significant research funding, take the lead in writing papers for publication in leading academic journals and other relevant media, including being available to provide expert commentary in a variety of media. Finally, you will promote research of EXPOSIOME, and disseminate research findings and consolidate the Institute’s international reputation through participation in international conference and public engagement activities.


The position is based in two research groups of Prof. Rob Willems at the Department of Medical Microbiology of the UMC Utrecht and Prof. Dick Heederik at the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS) of Utrecht University. IRAS is a leading institute in the field of environmental health risk assessment in Europe. The IRAS is a partnership between the faculties of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine that has an excellent research organization and a widespread international network. Besides epidemiologists the IRAS hosts biostatisticians, exposure scientists and risk assessors. Specifically, the Environmental Epidemiology Division of IRAS conducts research on environmental contributors (non-genetic factors including lifestyle, environmental, occupational exposures) to adverse health effects and conducts etiological research on several chronic diseases. Both UMC Utrecht and IRAS are part of the recently established Utrecht Life Sciences EXPOSOME hub (https://exposome.sites.uu.nl). The UMC Utrecht hosts many relevant cohorts, and from these we have multiple biospecimen types to be leveraged, ranging from DNA samples to an ongoing collection of stool, oral and skin swab samples. The department of Medical Microbiology is also responsible for infectious disease diagnostics (bacteriology, virology, serology, mycology and parasitology), clinical microbiological consultancy, and infection prevention at the University Medical Center Utrecht and the department has an important role in teaching and training of medical doctors, PhD and undergraduate students. Further research themes within the Department of Medical Microbiology include comparative and functional genomics to identify and characterize genes that contribute to the success of antibiotic-resistant opportunistic pathogens that frequently colonize and infect hospitalized patients. Genomic and metagenomic approaches to characterize the dynamics and transmission of antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in hospitalized patients and to study the effects of antibiotic induced dysbiosis on the selection of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the gut. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo models are used to bacterial pathogenesis, immune evasion and anti-viral resistance.


You hold a PhD in biology relevant to microbiome research. You have an established record of independent research, including a history of obtaining significant research funding and effective management of projects. You have a strong first/senior author publication record in peer-reviewed journals and have experience of effectively leading, managing and mentoring research teams, including promoting excellence. Finally, you have strong collaboration skills, including the ability to develop productive interactions with researchers within and outside the institute including at other national and international centers.

The maximum salary for this position (100%) is € 6.895,00 gross per month based on full-time employment (work week 36 hours). This job is based on a temporary position for 4 years with the possibility of a permanent position.

In addition, we offer an annual benefit of 8.3%, holiday allowance, travel expenses and career opportunities. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Cao University Medical Centers (UMC).
