Your position

he department of Nephrology and Hypertension is part of the Utrecht Cluster of Cardiovascular Translational Biology and participates in the Institutional Regenerative Medicine Programme. One important research line focuses on renal and vascular regeneration. It involves fundamental research and animal experiments on the role of adult stem- and progenitor cells in vascular and renal regeneration as well as evaluation of stem and progenitor cell dysfunction in patients with cardiovascular and renal disease. In addition the department of Nephrology is involved in clinical studies evaluating the effects of stem cell therapy in patients with vascular disease. The project: ‘Towards a clinical strategy of bone marrow-derived progenitor cell therapy to halt progression of chronic kidney disease’ is supported by a VIDI grant from the Netherlands Foundation of Scientific Research (NWO). Chronic kidney disease, due to its progressive nature and associated cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, is a major health problem worldwide. New interventions to slow or prevent disease progression are needed. We demonstrated that bone marrow-derived stem and progenitor cells contribute to renal regeneration. Overall aim of the current project is to investigate whether stem cell-based therapy can prevent progression of chronic kidney disease. We will investigate whether administration of stem cells from adult donors prevents progression of chronic kidney disease in a rat model and study the potential effects of stem cell dysfunction. Techniques that will be used include animal experiments (chronic non-invasive follow-up as well as acute instrumentation for administration of stem cells or terminal measurement of renal function, kidney transplantations), cell culture, flow cytometry, and immunohistochemistry.
