An intracranial aneurysm is a bulging, weakened area in the wall of an artery in the brain. An aneurysm can rupture causing a brain hemorrhage (a so-called subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)), a type of stroke with devastating effects. By means of preventive screening with Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA), intracranial aneurysms can be detected in an early stage followed by endovascular or surgical treatment to prevent future SAH. However, this early detection and preventive treatment of aneurysms fall short as we do not know who is at risk. In this research project we aim to identify anatomical risk factors for the development of aneurysms using innovative methods with machine learning. We offer a PhD project on the analysis of MRA images and to contribute to the development of technical methods through machine learning and image analysis, to predict the presence of aneurysms. The ultimate goal is to predict the development of aneurysms in all patients with a high risk of aneurysms.

This research is a collaboration between the Neurology department of the division Brain and the Image Sciences Institute of the division Imaging, both from the UMC Utrecht. The division Imaging is internationally recognized for its research on image acquisition, image analysis, diagnostic imaging, image-based prognosis and machine learning. The Neurology department is world leading in research on subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) with established national and international collaborations. You will work in a team of medical image researchers and neurologists.

You have an MSc degree in exact sciences (e.g. mathematics, physics, computer science) or biomedical engineering and affinity with clinical research and data analysis. Affinity with neurovascular diseases is an advantage. Experience with computer programming, machine learning and / or image analysis is highly appreciated. Because the treatment of patients with aneurysms is multidisciplinary, you will collaborate with different professionals. You have strong communication and organizational skills and you are motivated to perform research with clinical impact. We expect an active attitude in which personal initiative is highly appreciated. You are able to find creative solutions for difficult problems. After successfully completing the four years of research, you will be awarded a PhD degree.
