Your task will be to develop MRI-based imaging techniques to automatically identify lung tumours and surrounding anatomy in (near) real-time. You will then develop MRI-guided dynamic multi-leaf collimator tracking, thus enabling the MRI-Linac to continuously compensate for anatomical motion. You will work in a multidisciplinary team of physicians and technical scientists and RTTs to bring these techniques to the clinic and test their efficacy.
The Elekta Unity, a hybrid MRI-linear accelerator radiotherapy machine introduced in 2018, has the potential to transform cancer therapies by enabling real-time imaging during treatment, thereby allowing tumours to be targeted more effectively while also sparing more healthy tissue. The University Medical Center Utrecht played a key role in the R&D for this 1.5 T MRI-Linac machine. We are now looking for a PhD candidate to research and develop novel software components and clinical workflows to fully exploit the advantages of the MRI-linac for lung radiotherapy.
With the increased precision of MRI-guided real-time radiotherapy, we expect to be able to increase the dose to the tumour, increasing the likelihood of a complete response. Because of the mobility of the tumour due to respiratory and cardiac motion, large treatment margins are added to the tumour in current clinical practice. We expect to be able to shrink these margins considerably, thus limiting the exposure of normal tissue and reducing the likelihood of side effects.
We are looking for an ambitious and enthusiastic candidate with a strong interest in medical technology. The candidate should have a master’s degree in physics, applied physics, computer science, or equivalent with a strong technical background. Prior programming experience is a must-have. Experience with radiotherapy as part of the master program is appreciated but not mandatory. Fluency in English is essential for this position. The maximum salary for this position (100%) is € 3.103,00 gross per month based on full-time employment (work week 36 hours). This job is based on a temporary position for 4 years.
