This project aims to identify and evaluate the ethical and societal aspects of Exposome research. The Exposome has been defined as the totality of internal and external exposures individuals experience over their lives and how those exposures affect health. Large amounts of data of the person and their environment are collected and combined originating from microbiome mapping or wearing an accelerometer to as far as analyzing satellite images and social factors. These data will be analysed with advanced data techniques such as AI algorithms. Despite conceptual overlap with related fields of inquiry, Exposome research stands out by the integration of many different scientific domains and extensive interactions with the personal domain. This type of research has ethical and societal implications that include among others the ethics of using advanced data techniques and the ethics of developing increasingly personalised public health interventions. We will combine ethical-theoretical research with citizen panels wherein information about what stakeholders such as data subjects, researchers, clinicians, policy makers and the general public perceive as the main ethical and societal challenges of Exposome research. You will write a PhD thesis (based on scientific publications) and follow courses at the Graduate School of Life Sciences and/or Philosophy; you will also teach Medical Ethics and Medical Humanities courses at the Faculty of Medicine. Interviews will take place on August 10th. Starting date: Between October 1st, 2020 and January 1st, 2021. The appointment will be for a total of 48 months. The initial appointment will be for a period of 12 months, which will be extended upon a positive evaluation. The maximum monthly salary for this 100% position on the basis of full-time employment (working week of 36 hours) is € 3.103,00 Bruto per month, see for further information: Employment conditions UMC Utrecht. This is a temporary appointment for 48 months. This project is funded by the EU H2020 project: EXposome Powered tools for healthy living in urbAN Settings (EXPANSE) (PI: prof. Roel Vermeulen) on the 9 large-scale projects forming the European Human Exposome Project.

Department

You will work in the Department of Medical Humanities of the Julius Center at the University Medical Center Utrecht and will collaborate with academics and clinicians both within and outside the UMC Utrecht. Supervisors of this project will be Prof dr Annelien Bredenoord, Prof dr Roel Vermeulen and Dr Karin Jongsma. The Department of Medical Humanities is a highly interdisciplinary group that profits from the synergy with researchers working in research ethics, technology ethics, narrative medicine, end of life ethics, health law, medical history, and qualitative research. It consists of three full professors, two associate professors, one assistant professor, three postdocs and more than 15 PhD students. As an embedded member of our department you will also be involved with shared activities pertaining to teaching, research and professional training. You will be member of a larger Exposome Research community at the UMC Utrecht and Utrecht University, headed by prof Roel Vermeulen.

Profile

You have a master degree in (bio)ethics, (political) philosophy, health sciences, science and technology studies and/or medicine with considerable experience in ethics or philosophy. You are interested in responsible innovation and about working at the crossroads of ethics and health. You are both able to conduct academic ethics research, and to describe and reflect on the ways digital technologies change and interact with society. Experience with qualitative research methods such as interviewing, conducting focus groups is required. Experience with NVivo or Atlas.ti is also highly valued. You are highly self-motivated, willing to work in an interdisciplinary team, but also able to work independently. You have fluent oral and writing skills in English and Dutch.

The maximum salary for this position (100%) is € 3.103,00 gross per month based on full-time employment (work week 36 hours). This job is based on a temporary position for 1 year, with potential extension to 4 years..
