Vacancy number: 2020/0258
Apply to: October 27 2020
Education: University
Employment: Temporary position
Full-time/Part-time: 36 - 36 hours

You will work within a team of other PhD students and technicians on the MING sponsored projects on epilepsy. You will work on your own specific project that is aimed at finding novel therapies for mono-genetic epilepsies. The cause of disease in these epilepsies is a known gene mutation resulting in either a loss- or gain of function of the encoded protein. Your project aims to develop therapies that can overcome the detrimental effect of such mutations. To this end you will explore novel gene therapies, including CRISPR-based inactivating or activating techniques, and RNA inhibition and activation, to modulate gene expression. Furthermore, you will test novel genome editing techniques such as prime-editing to correct the disease mutation in vitro. To accomplish this, you will need to work in a small team, help guide other members, and will supervise students.

You will work in the Center for Molecular Medicine, which is a research center that focuses on understanding the molecular and cellular basis of disease. More than 160 researchers perform multidisciplinary fundamental and translational research in relation to various diseases, including cancer and genetic disorders. The aim of the CMM is to train the next generation of biomedical scientists and medical doctors by performing internationally leading, fundamental biomedical research and by offering stimulating and excellent education. The MING project you work on is embedded within the focus area “Epilepsy” of the recently established UMCU Brain Center Rudolf Magnus. This focus area connects all research in clinical and experimental neuroscience carried out at the University Medical Center Utrecht.

You are a biomedical scientist with a MSc degree and expertise in molecular biology. You have a natural curiosity that motivates you, and like to ask and discus scientific concepts. You are a creative person that is eager to work in a collaborative academic research environment. You like to innovate, but also have the grid that is needed to bring projects to completion. You have relevant experience with fundamental and/or translational research, preferably with molecular genetic analyses, molecular biology and cell culture. You have the ambition to develop yourself further as an independent scientist. For additional information, please contact Bobby Koeleman (
