As a postdoc within the ZonMw funded project ‘Psychosis Prognosis Predictor’, you will be further developing machine learning for prognostic prediction models in psychiatry and exploring new possibilities, including multi-task learning and the integration of existing models from the literature into our own models. You will work closely with other project members and reseachers inside and outside the hospital, as well as (inter)national collaborators. You will co-supervise the PhD students on the project and you will have the opportunity to publish your results in international journals.

You will be working in the Department of Psychiatry in the Brain Division at UMC Utrecht, in the research line ‘Patterns in Psychiatry’. Our group focuses on discovering patterns in patient data that are related to properties of individual people, such as presence/risk of psychiatric disorder (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, etc.), course of the disease, intelligence (IQ), prognosis (response to medication), etc. Patient data can take any form; most of our work is related to MRI brain scans and clinical/demographic data. We have recently demonstrated that the brains of patients with schizophrenia show accelerated aging. However, it is not known exactly why these patterns predict age, IQ, schizophrenia, and so on. Also, the accuracy and thus application in the clinic is still limited. The current project therefore aims to further develop these prediction models, which should result in a tool that can be tested in the clinic. This tool, the ‘Psychosis Prognosis Predictor’, (1) predicts the course of the disease for an individual patient based on his/her clinical parameters, (2) predicts what a patient can do to obtain a more favorable outcome, and (3) shows what these predictions are based on.

As the successful candidate for this position, you hold a PhD degree in artificial intelligence, mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics, or other relevant area, with a strong affinity with the field of data science in medicine. Good knowledge of and proven experience with machine learning is required. Experience with other forms of mathematical modeling is a benefit. You are enthusiastic about research in psychiatry and are keen to use your technical and research capabilities to contribute to the body of knowledge about psychiatric disorders and how we can make predictions that are relevant to the individual patient. You are capable of both working independently and in collaboration with other researchers. You are a creative thinker and look forward to contributing your own ideas.

The maximum salary for this position (80-100%) is € 4.481,00 gross per month based on full-time employment (work week 36 hours). This job is based on a temporary position for 2 - 2.5 years.

In addition, we offer an annual benefit of 8.3%, holiday allowance, travel expenses and career opportunities. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Cao University Medical Centers (UMC).
