Your task will be to develop electrophysiological imaging techniques that will enable precise targeting of the treatment volume within the heart on the MRI-linac. You will then develop MRI-guided cardiac gating and respiratory tracking techniques, thus enabling the MRI-Linac to continuously compensate for anatomical motion. You will work in a multidisciplinary team of physicians and technical scientists and RTTs to bring these techniques to the clinic and test their efficacy.
The Elekta Unity, a hybrid MRI-linear accelerator radiotherapy machine introduced in 2018, has the potential to transform cancer therapies by enabling real-time imaging during treatment, thereby allowing tumours to be targeted more effectively while also sparing more healthy tissue. The University Medical Center Utrecht played a key role in the R&D for this 1.5 T MRI-Linac machine. Importantly, the arrival of highly-precise MRI-guided radiotherapy also has the potential to revolutionize the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia. By using non-invasive, accurately targeted radio ablation, the number of cardiac arrhythmia episodes can potentially be drastically reduced or entirely obliterated. We are now looking for a PhD candidate to research and develop novel treatment techniques and clinical workflows to fully exploit the advantages of the MRI-linac for cardiac radio ablation.
With the increased precision of MRI-guided real-time radiotherapy, we expect to be able to accurately ablate small sub-volumes of the heart using large single fraction doses of radiation. Because of the mobility of the heart due to respiratory and cardiac motion this can be challenging. As part of this project, we will explore the synergistic benefits of respiratory motion tracking and cardiac gating.
We are looking for an ambitious and enthusiastic candidate with a strong interest in medical technology. The candidate should have a master’s degree in physics, applied physics, computer science, or equivalent with a strong technical background. Prior programming experience is highly recommended. The maximum salary for this position (100%) is € 3.103,00 gross per month based on full-time employment (work week 36 hours). This job is based on a temporary position for 4 years.
