Impairments in blood flow to the brain are strongly related to dementia. Our group investigates how disturbances in vascular function and structure affect cognition. We have collected a wide range of biomarkers of vascular and non-vascular aetiology, (micro)structural brain injury, as well as detailed cognitive data from large patient samples. The postdoc will apply advanced multidimensional approaches to systematically explore the dynamic spatial and temporal interaction between these biomarkers in the development of dementia. Examples of such methods are network science (graph theory), machine learning, and weighted correlation matrices. The main goal will be to identify new disease pathways and clinical phenotypes of VCI.The postdoc will co-supervise two to three of our PhD students with already ongoing projects on brain network disturbances in dementia. The post-doc will also have a role in overseeing our data-management and quality control system.
The Postdoc will work in the Vascular Cognitive Impairment (VCI) group of Prof. Biessels at the department of Neurology, part of the UMC Utrecht Brain Center. The VCI group is a highly multidisciplinary team including researchers with a background in medicine, cognitive neuroscience, neuropsychology, and biomedical engineering. There is close collaboration with the Imaging Sciences Institute, which has longstanding expertise in high-resolution MR brain imaging, including diffusion-weighted and functional MR imaging.
We are looking for talented postdoctoral candidates with a strong research background in neuroscience research, network modelling or systems neuroscience and affinity with clinical research. The candidate should have at least 2 year experience with supervising junior researchers (MSc and PhD students), excellent communication skills, and should be interested to work in an multidisciplinary team of medical doctors and cognitive neuroscientists. The postdoc should be able to set an example for the PhD students in the group and will be actively involved in their training.
