We are expanding our efforts to develop, modify and characterize fusion proteins of regulatory cytokines to treat chronic pain and/or inflammatory disease. For this project, we will need to develop novel fusion proteins of anti-inflammatory cytokines, to express and purify them and to test them in vitro for their effectiveness to modulate cellular responses in rodent and human cells and tissue. You will be responsible for the generation, testing and validation of the expression and function of these proteins. For this, you will work independently and collaborate with multiple scientists in our team. Experience with molecular techniques (cloning), protein expression, protein purification, and cell culture are a pre-requisite. Experience with animal work is an advantage.

Department

The laboratory for neuro-immunology of pain is hosted in the in the Center for Translational Immunology (CTI) at the UMC Utrecht. The group of Eijkelkamp is an international team of researchers that are actively collaborating on projects to better understand chronic pain and to develop novel therapeutic strategies to stop pain. We are interested in the biology of cytokines in pain regulation and how we can use fusion proteins of these cytokines in treating pain. Therefore, we perform basic and translational studies in vitro and in vivo with the aim to translate our findings into the clinics. The CTI is a well-facilitated department with experts in all fields of immunology, and is embedded in the focus area ‘Infection and Immunology’ of the UMC Utrecht. We are structured to facilitate bench-to-bedside research. We have a state-of-the-art flow cytometry, imaging and antibody development facility (UMAB) and ample experience in protein production though our protein facility.

Profile

Required skills: Trained at HLO (hoger laboratorium onderwijs; university of applied sciences) level, or equivalent. experience in molecular cloning and protein purification. Work independently and on multiple projects at the same time. Communicate in English at a sufficient level to discuss your results and follow-up plans. Preferred skill: Affinity with neuro-immunology. Desired skill: Permit to perform animal experiments, and the willingness to do so.
